Beyond The Panels #11- You Wanted The Best, You Got It. He's Back!
Okay, so let's start with this little preamble- while I'm going to talk about my reaction to one part of Marvel: Legacy #1, I'm not going to talk about my overall reaction to it. I'm saving that for the next installment, so if you're for some reason interested in the opinion of an asshole on the comic, come on back. Come on back regardless.
Suffice it to say there will be ..... SPOILERS.
Well, now that's out of the way, let's get to the main precedings.
So, in Marvel: Legacy #1, we got the return of the one, true Wolverine, Logan. Our Logan. If you're a regular reader, you've probably read my whole entry about my love for the character. To say that I'm happy about it is an understatement. It's one of those things that I thought would happen, mostly because Jason Aaron has a love for Logan that's unrivaled at the company and bringing him back, in the wake of his most successful movie, is good business. It's Logan, for fuck's sake. Logan sells books. Sure, we've had Old Man Logan (and he was fucking great), but this is our Logan. The one we grew up with. The one we saw grow and change and become the linchpin of the Marvel Universe.
The heart and soul, if you will.
That's fucking right. I said it.
I've seen a lot of complaints about his return. A lot of people who don't understand why they'd bring him back. "Surely," they say, "there must be better characters. More fantastic ones." To which I say, sure. There are. They would be a better fit. I get it. However, right now, in our current Marvel Universe, he's more important. He's the most important, in a lot of ways.
So, Logan is a mutant. He's one of the main posters boys for mutants- the experimented upon killing machine who overcame his programming, became a hero, served with the X-Men, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, was friends with everyone, and became headmaster of his own mutant school. That's pretty impressive. He's the one mutant who can go to Captain America and ask for anything. He's the mutant who can talk with SHIELD. He's the mutant who can go to Reed Richards and ask him for help with his lost healing factor. He's friends with Spider-Man. Everyone knows him and respects him.
You see, one of the symptoms of his over exposure for so many years is that he's teamed with everyone. He knows everyone. He's saved everyone at least once. In older days, those interactions were more combative, but as time has gone by, he's developed and become a friendlier person, for lack of a better term. In a shared universe like Marvel's, one that has never gone through a continuity reboot, all of those stories happened. All the people who he had badmouthed and been gruff to have seen him grow and worked with him through those times. Friendships have been established.
He's the guy who goes to every party. He's the one who the heroes call when they need to get the mutants onboard with shit. He represents them. He's the voice of a rather large portion of the Marvel U. A portion that has been left on it's own for a long time. Bringing him back is a peace offering to a lot of X-Men fans, one of the last few they've been giving us lately. Trying to get us back on board with the rest of the Marvel Universe. The issue positions him in a rather important place as well- the holder of an Infinity Gem (which is blue, so it should be the Mind Gem, but since they've called it an Infinity Stone and it's shaped more like one of the movie ones, it may be the Tesseract, which would be fucking lame as fuck), he's going to have to play a part in the coming battle. They've already set him up as a big part of what's coming.
Of course, even I would say this position seems a little much (and I swear to Christ, if they put him in All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, I'm going to be pissed and try not to buy any of it; try being the operative word, there), but I'm just happy he's back. I'm not going to go too much into it, but Logan means a lot to me as a character. We've grown together. It's probably the nicest thing Marvel could have given me (that isn't a job)- my favorite character, back to life in an important position. I won't say it makes up for all the shit they've done to piss me off (and it doesn't mean I'm happy with Marvel: Legacy #1, either, but that's the subject of the next post, coming soon to a screen near you!), but it's a step.
And yes, as I've said earlier, I completely understand why some people are reacting rather disappointed in it. It makes sense, if you're not a student of the character. I understand why people would see him as a character that isn't as important to the overall Marvel Universe. I've pretty much been a greater student of his corner of the MU and his role in both than people who weren't fond of the character, but I think if you just look into the whole thing a bit, you can see it, too. Especially, in the last decade, with his Avengers membership and his less contentious attitude towards teaming up and other heroes. It's there, you just have to look for it and really, you don't even to have to look that hard.
So, yeah, I get it. Still, it's an important return, one that means a lot to the overall structure of the Marvel Universe. He's a bridge between so many people that had no bridge for so long. He's the linchpin to the whole thing. With him back, we can see a more cohesive Marvel Universe. I'm very excited for what comes next (unless he goes to All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, which I will grudgingly buy to get what he's doing next, but I won't be very fucking happy about it).
Next Issue: So, as I teased several times above, next time, we'll be talking about my overall reactions to Marvel: Legacy #1. It will be interesting. So, if you want to know what I think and how it compares to your own reaction, join us next time here at....
